Voting by mail in Yukon elections

Q. How do I apply to vote by mail?

You can apply for a ballot to be mailed to you by completing the online application, emailing or mailing us a completed application form. To apply by email or mail, download and print the fillable form, being sure to include a photocopy of your identification

Online applications are not available in school council elections.

Q. When should I apply to vote by mail?

If considering voting by mail, you should apply as soon as an election has been called to allow enough time for the ballot kit to reach you and for it to travel back to Whitehorse.

Q. When will my ballot kit be mailed to me?

Ballot kits are mailed as soon as they're approved.

Q. How do I find the candidates?

Because the list of candidates may not be finalized when your mail-in ballot is sent, look for the list of candidates online or call us at 1-866-668-8683.

Q. What is the deadline to return the ballot? Do I have to return my ballot by mail?

The completed ballot kit must be received at Elections Yukon by 8PM on the day polls close (polling day) to be counted. You can return it by mail in the pre-paid return envelope or if you are concerned that it might not arrive in time, it can be dropped off using the secure dropbox. Late ballots CANNOT be counted.

Q. Where is the drop box?

The drop box is located by the west entrance to the Jim Smith Building (old Whitehorse public library book return). The drop box is available 24-hours a day during an election.

Q. How do I find out if my ballot was received?

If you applied to vote by mail online, you can use the confirmation code and link that were emailed to you when you applied to monitor the status of your application.
Online applications are not available in school council elections.

Q. Can I change my mind and vote online after I've applied to vote by mail?

No. Once your application to vote by mail has been processed, you will be struck off the voters list and you won’t be able to reapply.

Q. What happens if I don't receive my ballot kit?

If you don’t receive your ballot kit, you should contact us to request a replacement. If you have applied online, you would have received an email with a tracking code, so check to see if your kit has been mailed before requesting a replacement.
Online applications are not available in school council elections.

Q. How is my mail-in vote kept secret?

The ballot kit contains a secrecy envelope and a certificate envelope:

  • You put your marked ballot inside the secrecy envelope, which has no information about you.
  • The secrecy envelope goes inside the certificate envelope with your name, address, declaration, and signature.

Before the count begins, the secrecy envelopes are removed from the certificate envelopes and returned to the ballot box. This ensures that you can not be associated with your ballot when the ballots are being counted.

Q. How does Elections Yukon make sure only eligible electors can vote by mail?

There are safeguards at every step of the vote by mail process:

  • To apply for a vote by mail kit, electors need to provide ID and declare they are eligible to vote.
  • Elections Yukon staff review and approve applications before sending out the kit.
  • When completing your mail-in vote, you must sign an oath saying you are eligible to vote.
  • Elections Yukon tracks ballots to make sure only those issued by Elections Yukon are processed, counted, and reported.
